Here's a rundown of rainfall during the growing season of 2010 for the Midwest. Information from the Midwest Climate Center and various National Weather Service offices:
For the Midwest, spring 2010 brought normal to above normal rainfall from Missouri through the southeastern half of Iowa, northwestern Illinois, northern Indiana and southern lower Michigan. In Minnesota, rainfall was 150 to 200 percent of normal in the northwest. The only portion that had below-normal rain was the upper peninsula of Michigan, which had less than 50 percent of normal.
June featured two-inch plus above normal rains over much of the region, with southern Iowa taking in more than 8 inches above normal. The Iowa statewide total in June was 10.34 inches, the second-highest total on record next to the 10.50 inches in June 1993. Illinois had its second-wettest June with 7.8 inches.
In July, heavy rains were again featured. Heavy rains fell across the region with totals over 10 inches for the month in many locations. From Iowa and central Missouri east to central Wisconsin, four-inch plus over normal rains were recorded. More than 1,100 daily rainfall records were set in July, with over 200 in each of Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin. 38 Midwest states logged their 2nd-wettest July in history and another 40 had their 3rd-wettest Julys. Oelwein, IA had 20.33 inches for the month, shattering its alltime record of 13.30 inches in June 1925.
For August, a definite west to east split showed up in the rain pattern. In general, the states west of the Mississippi had total rain of four to six inches, with central Iowa having extremely heavy rain of six to 15 plus inches; this included a swath of 10-15 plus inches in central Iowa. The heavier four to six inch rain extended into Wisconsin and western Illinois. From central Illinois east and south, amounts were much lighter, ranging from less than an inch to two inches in most locations. Indianapolis, IN had its driest August ever with just .37 inch rainfall--3.45 inches below normal.
